Given in thirds of a month (early / mid / late) for the northern hemisphere in a temperate climate; altitude and season shift them.

Fruit

Soft, buttery and melting, juicy, richly sweet and faintly tart, delicately spiced. Quality depends on site: tasty from warm positions, only semi-melting from cool ones.

Growth

Vigorous growth; suited to orchard meadow and garden. Fruit usually wind-fast until tree ripeness.

Yield

Cropping starts medium-late to late, at the earliest from the 8th year, then high and regular.

Notes

Broadly plantable up to medium elevations; prefers warmer, nutrient-rich, moist soils in open positions, copes with cooler soils too. No frost hollows or damp sites (scab). Pick-ripe mid Sept to early Oct, eating-ripe Oct to late Nov, keeps 4 to 5 weeks.
