Description
Fruit
Small-fruited, moderately juicy, firm, mildly sweet-tart. Formerly used solely to make pear syrup (Birnenkraut).
Growth
Very vigorous landscape tree growing into huge, landscape-defining crowns.
Yield
Heavy bearer; historically 15 to 20 hundredweight per tree were harvested in some years.
Notes
Rare, robust local variety from the Rhineland (Bonn area) for large orchard meadows. Low soil and climate demands, no special warmth needs; grown up to 350 m. Tree- and eating-ripe in September, keeps only about 2 weeks. On the NRW list of old orchard varieties.
Care
As a large-crowned orchard tree it needs little care; process early since keeping is brief.
