Description
Fruit
Very juicy, refreshingly sweet-tart and delicately aromatic, very palatable. On poor sites the flesh can turn coarse and turnip-like.
Growth
Medium vigour. Best trained as a south-wall espalier with rain protection.
Yield
Cropping normally starts early but is often delayed by young-fruit drop. Later moderate and regular yields.
Notes
One of the finest winter dessert pears, but only for very warm, sheltered sites (wine regions, southern countries). Tolerates no high elevations; needs nutrient-rich, moist soils. Tree-ripe late Oct to early Nov, eating-ripe late Nov to January, keeps about 3 months.
Care
Provide rain protection on the espalier against scab, especially when young. Secure a warm, sheltered site.
