Description
Fruit
Very sweet, subtly bitter, winey-spicy perry pear with a medium tannin content. Turns doughy quickly after harvest.
Growth
Medium-strong to strong but slow-growing.
Yield
Early to come into bearing.
Notes
The best-known perry pear, from which the first German sparkling wine was made about 50 years before grape sekt. For orchards with higher heat needs, warm sites without upland positions and moist, nutrient-rich soils. Tree-ripe early October, ready end of October, keeps only about 2 weeks.
Care
Best processed immediately after harvest as the fruit quickly goes doughy. Choose a warm, moist, nutrient-rich site; watch for fireblight and pear decline.
