On good sites juicy, half-melting, faintly sweet with a fine, firm acidity; aroma weak but true to type.

Strong growth; for orchard, garden and espalier. Known as a heavy bearer.

Yield

Cropping starts mid-early and becomes very heavy.

Notes

Only worthwhile as a dessert pear from warmer sites, otherwise for compote, preserving, drying or hard-ripe juice. Prefers low sites with warm, moist soils. Fruit holds against wind until tree-ripe, then drops heavily. Tree-ripe early October, ready to use December to February, keeps 3-4 months.

Care

Given its scab and shoot-scab tendency choose an airy, warm site and harvest promptly at tree ripeness before the fruit drops.
