Given in thirds of a month (early / mid / late) for the northern hemisphere in a temperate climate; altitude and season shift them.

Fruit

Very juicy, melting or half-melting, sweet-winey and spicy; but tends to small fruit.

Growth

Weak growth; good for the garden and very good as espalier. Fruit not wind-firm, dropping early especially on dry soil.

Yield

Cropping starts very early and becomes high and regular; thin when the set is heavy.

Notes

Grows up to mid-mountain sites around 350 m. Needs warmer, well-aired sites with dry air plus rich, moist soils and intensive soil care. Tree-ripe from early October, ready to use November to January, keeps 3-4 months; check for rot and shrivel.

Care

Keep soil evenly moist and rich, as fruit drops in drought; thin heavy sets; on poor sites grow rain-sheltered on espalier (against scab).
