Uses
Edible: The plant's seed is available for purchase and can be used as a substitute for almonds once chopped and roasted. It can also be dried, ground into a powder, and utilized as a thickening agent in stews or for baking. Care should be taken to wash the seed thoroughly before consumption to eliminate bitter tannins, although this process may result in the loss of some minerals. A traditional way of preparing the seed involved burying it in damp soil during winter and unearthing it in spring to reduce its astringency. The roasted seed is suitable as a coffee alternative. Additionally, the plant's bark yields an edible gum that can be used as manna.
Medicinal: All galls produced on the tree are highly astringent and can be used to treat bleeding, chronic diarrhea, and dysentery.
Other uses: A leaf mulch made from fresh leaves can hinder plant growth, but it can repel slugs and grubs. The bark, rich in calcium, is a key ingredient in the herbal compost activator "Quick Return," which accelerates bacterial activity in compost. Oak galls, formed by insect larvae, provide tannin and dye for making black dye and long-lasting ink. Trees are harvested for various purposes like basketry, fuel, and construction. The wood yields tar, quaiacol, acetic acid, creosote, and tannin. Tannin, extracted commercially from the bark and present in the leaves, constitutes 11.6% in the bark and 9.2% in the wood with 10% moisture. The bark, easily separable from the wood in April and May, can produce a violet dye when infused with copperas. The hard, tough, and durable wood is valuable for furniture, construction, and as fuel or charcoal.
Growing
The oak tree thrives in rich loamy soil, tolerates partial shade when young, and can grow well in heavy clay or moist soil. It is drought-resistant once established but does not do well in dry or shallow soil. While it can withstand exposed locations, it does not like salty winds. This tree is valuable for timber and serves as a crucial food source for various butterfly caterpillars, with 284 insect species associated with it. Traditionally, oaks have been used for timber through coppicing or pollarding every 50 years on average. In spring, the oak produces flowers on new growth, and its seeds mature within the first year. Mature trees have thick bark that protects them from wildfires, and young trees can regenerate from the base after being cut or burned. To avoid root disturbance, it is recommended to plant young oak trees directly in their permanent location. Oaks readily hybridize with other species in the genus and are resistant to leaf roller attacks and honey fungus.
Propagation
Seed viability decreases rapidly when it dries out. It is recommended to sow the seeds right after they mature in an outdoor seedbed, ensuring protection from rodents. Alternatively, seeds can be stored in a cool, moist place over winter. For small seed quantities, deep pots in a cold house can be used. It is crucial to transplant the plants with deep taproots into their permanent location promptly. Trees grown directly in their final position tend to thrive better. Avoid leaving trees in a nursery bed for more than two growing seasons without transplanting to prevent poor establishment.
