Given in thirds of a month (early / mid / late) for the northern hemisphere in a temperate climate; altitude and season shift them.

Fruit

Distinctive flavour reminiscent of quince aroma (rated 2-3). Tends to produce small fruit.

Growth

Weak-growing with a rounded, rather small crown that tends to irregularity. Scaffold branches obliquely upright, side wood medium-length, dense and thin-twigged. Wind-firm.

Yield

Cropping starts early with abundant fruit set and a tendency to small fruit. Keeps for about 4 months.

Notes

Requires sunny sites. Named after Vincent von Zuccalmaglio (1806-1876), a notary and newspaper publisher in the Rhineland. Suitable for the garden.

Care

Vigour declines quickly under heavy cropping, so prune to rejuvenate repeatedly. Regular pruning helps control fruit size. Fruit wood is mainly from multiply-branched fruit shoots, unevenly distributed.
