Uses
Edible: Young leaves. Flower buds can be consumed raw or cooked.
Medicinal: The bark is known for its emmenagogue properties and is utilized to heal wounds and cuts by applying a fresh paste every 2-3 days for approximately 3 weeks. In Nepal, warmed root juice is applied to sprains, while the flower juice is employed to alleviate chronic bronchitis and toothache.
Other uses: The Japanese use the root of this plant to measure their handmade papers, which are crafted from the inner bark of Edgeworthia gardneri and various types of the paper mulberry tree (Broussonetya papyrifera). The root is soaked, crushed, and its mucilage extracted for adding to the paper pulp. The prepared material is placed in a linen bag, softened in water, and then the juice is extracted by manipulating the bag in the pulp container. The papermaker determines the adequacy of mucilage by the water's sticky consistency. This plant is the most commonly used source of mucilage in Japan.
Growing
