Round fruit about 5–7 cm across with a thick dark-purple to brownish rind and snow-white, juicy flesh in 4–8 segments. Sweet-tart and aromatic; some segments hold flat seeds.

Growth

Slow-growing evergreen tropical tree. Propagation is almost entirely via apomictic (nucellar) seeds producing genetically identical offspring, hence very little true cultivar diversity.

Yield

First crop often only after 8–15 years. As a tropical evergreen it has no fixed Northern-Hemisphere season; main harvest in SE Asia May–September (varies by region).

Notes

Not a bred cultivar but the practically uniform standard genotype. Because mangosteen reproduces apomictically, nearly all trees worldwide are genetically almost identical; named 'varieties' are extremely rare.
