Medicinal: The leaves and fruits have astringent, soothing, and digestive properties. Leaves are collected and dried in early summer for future use. The fruit, especially before full ripeness, is considered effective medicinally. A decoction of leaves and fruits is used to treat amenorrhea, heavy menstruation, intermenstrual bleeding, and colic. The decoction can also be used to astringe the mucous membranes in the treatment of diarrhea, dysentery, and stomach ulcers.
