Origin & habitat

Europe โ€“ Mediterranean region. Introduced to Britain.

Grows in dry meadows, along paths and shrub edges, and on grasslands with moderately dry, nutrient-rich, and loamy soils. Prefers calcareous soils and occurs in plant communities of the Origanetalia order as well as Mesobromion and Arrhenatherion alliances. Found up to altitudes of approximately 1500 meters. Tolerates partly shaded to sunny locations.
