The free plan is meant for trying things out. As soon as trying out turns into a project, you hit three walls.

The basic search finds plants by name. The real strength — hardiness, layer, soil, harvest window, nitrogen, lime tolerance and thirty more filters — stays locked.
Cost: you find what you know, not what fits.
Your own plot, your parents' land, the club's allotment. With a single garden you delete one to create the other.
Cost: your planning does not fit into the app.

The free plan shows you how Permaplans works. Starter removes the limits so you can plan a real project to the end.
Plants, notes, tasks, photos: unlimited. You record what is in the garden, not what still fits the quota.
More than 1,100 species by over 40 criteria: site, food-forest layer, hardiness, soil, light, water, harvest window, nitrogen fixing, salt and lime tolerance. That is what the database was built for.
Place last summer's drone image as an overlay on the map and fit it to the property. More precise than any satellite image, and more current anyway.

Yes, any time. The paid remainder of your Starter period is credited, your gardens stay unchanged.
Access runs until the end of the paid period, then you fall back to the free plan. Nothing is deleted — you just cannot create beyond the free limits any more.
You can. In the browser you can look at a real garden, and in the app you start right away as a guest. If you register later, everything you created moves into your account.
